Almost every birthday song is about birthdays. That is the problem with them. The candles, the year that has passed, the wish for the year ahead — all of it is true of everyone having a birthday that day, which is why the song slides off. A birthday song that lands is not really about the birthday at all. It is about the person, and the birthday is just the reason you finally said so.
Start with the person, not the occasion
Before you write anything, answer one question: what would this person recognise as theirs and nobody else's? Not what you admire about them — what you would tease them about. The phrase they always say. The thing they are famously bad at. The way they answer the phone. The specific, slightly unflattering, entirely affectionate detail is the one that makes someone's face change when they hear it.
"She is kind and always there for me" is true and it is nothing. "She made me coffee every morning of the year I was ill" is one person. The second one is a song. The first one is a greetings card.
One detail beats five
The strongest instinct, once you start, is to get everything in — the holiday, the nickname, the dog, the job she hated, the night you both still talk about. Resist it. A song that lists five things about someone sounds like a list. A song that circles one thing sounds like it was written by someone who was paying attention.
If you genuinely cannot choose, pick the one you would tell a stranger first. That is usually the one that carries the others inside it.
Say what it is for, then get out of the way
Birthdays have a shape people expect: a look back, a moment of appreciation, a look forward. You do not need to force that shape — it arrives on its own once the occasion is named. What you have to supply is the part the occasion cannot: the detail, the relationship, and the tone. Is this funny, or is this the one where you finally say the serious thing? A song can do either, but it cannot do both at once, and deciding in advance saves you from a track that hedges.
Pick a genre they like, not one you like
This is the most common way a good idea goes wrong. The song is a gift, so it should sound like their music. If they have played the same three artists for fifteen years, that is the answer. If you have no idea, the safest choice is something warm and mid-tempo rather than something clever — a birthday song does not need to be surprising, it needs to be played twice.
Put it in their language
If the person you are writing for thinks in a different language from the one you searched in, the song should be in theirs. A birthday message that arrives in a grandmother's own language does something a translated one does not, and it costs nothing to choose.
Read the words before you hear the music
Lyrics are where a personalised song goes wrong, and they are also the cheapest thing to fix — a line that is not quite right is one edit, not a regeneration. A last check before you send it
